Welcome to the Forest Grove Community School
The Forest Grove Community School is a free public charter school that engages students in scholarship, stewardship and citizenship with the goal of educating for sustainability. We provide a caring, smaller school environment that challenges students to reach their highest potential through learning rooted in the local community. FGCS currently enrolls students in 1st through 8th grades. We operate under a charter contract with the Forest Grove School District and are governed by an independent board of directors. We are an Oregon non-profit corporation and a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. We serve students and families in and around Forest Grove, Oregon. We are located at 1914 Pacific Ave. in downtown Forest Grove, Oregon. You may contact us at 503-359-4600 or information@fgcschool.org.
AmeriCorps at FGCS: Committed to Student Achievement
Many of you have already met Mia Routh or seen her around campus. Mia is literally everywhere! As our 2012-13 AmeriCorps member through Partnerships for Student Achievement, Mia works with students at every level in every classroom and runs our Tree House after-school tutoring program. The mission of Partnerships for Student Achievement (PSA)is to increase K-12 student achievement in Washington County schools through tutoring, mentoring, extended-day activities, volunteer generation and parent involvement. FGCS is fortunate to be hosting an PSA AmeriCorps member for the second year.

Mia was raised in San Diego, California and earned both her bachelor's degree (health and exercise science) and her master's degree (molecular and cellular biology) from Colorado State University. Mia pursued a placement through AmeriCorps PSA because she was interested in living in Oregon and wanted to work with kids in a school setting after working several years at summer camps for children living with cancer. Mia loves the opportunity to work with students individually and in small groups because "you really get to know every child." PSA is designed to provide that kind of individualized attention to meet the academic needs of each student. "I feel so lucky to work with a broad range of students and learn about the unique needs of each age group," says Mia.
Mia works with a minimum of 60 students one-on-one and in small groups during the school day, focusing on reading, writing and math. After school, Mia and the volunteers she supervises are currently serving 22 students in the Tree House tutoring program, which meets 3:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays andThursdays and 1:15-2:30 p.m. Fridays - but she would love to serve even more. Serving more students depends on recruiting more volunteers who can commit one hour or more per week. Volunteering at Tree House is fun and no special skills are required - only an interest in helping kids learn. To learn more or to sign up for Tree House, contact Mia at m.routh@fgcschool.org or 503-359-4600, ext. 119.
