Help our school grow and thrive - volunteer!
The Community School was created by volunteers who devoted their time, talents and passions to turn a vision into reality. Now that we are up and running, we need volunteers more than ever to support teachers, enhance student learning and create a vibrant school community. Parents, grandparents, older siblings, other family members and friends all are encouraged to participate. Volunteer opportunities include:
Sustainability Steering Committee Member
Looking for a parent volunteer willing to attend monthly meetings where strategy for the school's sustainability objectives are discussed, prioritized, and managed. Output from these meetings will result in work teams being established or directed, and the setting of short- and long-term goals.
Green Purchasing Advisors
Looking for a team of parents and students who can commit about 10 hours per month to making sure we buy green at the community school. Members of this team will have two roles.
- Respond to "Guidance Requests" from staff members who need to make a purchase. This will require research on existing options, weighing different concerns like where it was made and of what.
- Review monthly purchasing reports to determine how often purchases are made sustainably. This will also include identifying opportunities to make changes to the system that are more effective and sustainable for everyone (like bulk purchases that cut down on packaging, time, and money).
Both of these roles will include monthly reports so we can track the impact this group has on the overall purchases of the school. Your success will be included in the Annual Sustainability Report, to be put out each year by the Green Team. To volunteer, contact Stephanie Vasquez Pettit at s.vasquez at fgcschool.org.
Supervise students during lunch, recess and release time: This is a great chance to get to know our students and give hardworking teachers a short break. Morning and afternoon times are available - you can help with as little as 20 minutes of your time! Chaperone 'Out and About' experiences: These are educational outings, often on foot, that help students learn about the local community. Each class goes out and about once a week (the same day each week) for anywhere from an hour to all day. Contact Gretchen Ziemer at g.ziemer@fgcschool.org or 503-359-4600.
Facilities maintenance: Volunteers can help with jobs such as hanging bulletin boards, installing shelving, taking out recycling, making small repairs or sweeping the floor - tasks will vary over time and can be scheduled at the volunteer's convenience. Contact Karen Torry at k.torry@fgcschool.org or 503-359-4600.
