The FGCS Board of Directors provides oversight and fiscal accountability for the school. Pursuant to state law, public charter schools in Oregon are incorporated as nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporations. The Board establishes policies and oversees the school's mission. The Board operates in compliance with state and federal laws and the FGCS Bylaws.
We have regular Board openings and parents and guardians of FGCS students are encouraged to apply! How does it work? The FGCS School Board is composed of a diverse group of volunteers. Most Board members are also FGCS parents, many of whom stay on after their children graduate as involved community members. Participation is designed to be straightforward and accessible:
Board meetings are held on Zoom from 6:30-8:00pm on the 4th Monday of every other month. Most meetings are held on Zoom but we try to meet in person once or twice a year for relationship building!
The Board is provided with an agenda, administrator’s report, and treasurer’s report in advance of each meeting, so the meeting can focus on discussion and questions.
Training is provided by school leadership when you join the board, and meetings are run in an open and collaborative manner to ensure everyone has opportunities to contribute and ask questions.
What does the Board do?
The Board is charged with providing “oversight and fiscal accountability to the school,” which means we review and approve policy changes and the monthly budget.
We also share concerns and questions we are hearing in the school community to foster a deeper connection between the community and the school administration.
When challenging situations arise in the school, the board may be asked to provide support, confirm alignment with school policies, and assist in communicating with the parent community.
Some board members hold specific roles (chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer), but most are simple voting members who contribute their time and valuable perspective to support the school’s mission and goals.
While board membership does not offer economic compensation, it does challenge your creativity, your wisdom and your courage. There is great satisfaction knowing you are helping ensure quality educational opportunities for the children of our community. How can I learn more? FGCS principal Vanessa Gray and the current board members would love to connect with you to discuss – please look for us around campus or email us any time! School Board meetings are also open to the public, so if you would like to see how one runs before submitting an application, check the FGCS Google calendar (accessible via ParentSquare) for meeting dates, times and location. Most meeting are held on Zoom but the Board occasionally meets in person. Zoom links are available through the calendar.
