Enrollment Process and Policy

Who May Enroll - Eligible Students FGCS serves students in 1st-8th grades. Our enrollment policy, which is dictated by state law, gives first priority to students residing within the Forest Grove School District. We also give priority to siblings of current FGCS students. Enrollment priority does not guarantee that a student will receive a spot and parents must still complete the enrollment process. Students residing outside the District may apply for enrollment and be admitted if spaces are available after all interested District applicants have enrolled.
District Residence Parents who indicate that they reside within the Forest Grove School District may be asked to provide proof of address if their student's address cannot be verified through Synergy, the student information system. Students who have previously been enrolled in private, online or home school may not be listed in Synergy. Parents will be notified if proof of residence is required.
First Grade Enrollment Students must have successfully completed kindergarten or be six years old by Sept. 1 to enroll in first grade. Research strongly suggests that students who will be six years old by Sept. 1 but who have not completed kindergarten will struggle with first-grade curriculum. Kindergarten provides a strong basis in literacy and numeracy that are essential for success in first grade, so we strongly recommend that all students complete a kindergarten program before enrolling in first grade.
Lottery If there are more applicants than spaces available at any grade, state law requires that admission be determined by lottery. The lottery for the 2026-27 school year will take place via Zoom at 12 p.m. Fri., Apri 17, 2026. Parents are welcome but not required to attend. A link to view the lottery on Zoom will be posted on the home page of this website prior to April 17 and will be emailed to parents whose students will be part of the lottery. Contact Karen Torry at [email protected] if you do not receive this link by April 16.
Notice of Lottery Results: Parents of students who are chosen for a spot during the lottery and those who are first on the waitlist for their grade will be notified by email within one week of the lottery. Others may contact office manager Rebecca Moore at [email protected] to inquire about their place on the waitlist.
Important Note About Sibling Applicants: State law allows FGCS to give priority for admission to siblings of currently enrolled students, but this priority applies ONLY during the open enrollment period January 15-April 1, 2025. Sibling applications submitted after the April 1 deadline do not receive priority, but will be placed on wait lists the same as other applicants. Siblings of current students are NOT guaranteed a spot, even if they apply during open enrollment, because there may be more sibling applications than there are spaces available; in that case, a separate sibling lottery will be held.
Wait Lists
Two wait lists for each grade will be established for those who do not receive a place during the lottery: one for students who reside inside the Forest Grove School District (see above for information about verifying residence) and one for those who reside outside the District. Position on the wait list is determined during the initial lottery process for applications received by 4 p.m. April 1, 2026. Spaces will be offered to all students on the in-district wait list before spaces are offered to students on the out-of-district wait list.
Students who apply for enrollment after the 4 p.m. April 1, 2026 deadline will be placed on the list based upon date of application. Applicants may contact the school office to inquire about their place on the wait list. Spaces will be filled in numerical order from the list. Wait lists are maintained until the end of the relevant school year; they do not carry over from year to year.
Staying Informed
Regularly check email messages to make sure you receive information about enrollment, the lottery and (if your student is offered a classroom spot), fall registration. Check spam/junk folders and add FGCS addresses to your email contacts to make sure you stay informed. Contact the school office at 503-359-4600 with questions.
Finalizing Enrollment: Mandatory Parent Meeting & Registration Please be aware that being offered a space at FGCS does not finalize your child's enrollment - additonal steps are required. Parents of new students who are offered a classroom spot for 26-27 are required to attend a mandatory meeting with the principal. Parents will be notified of the meeting date/time by email. The meeting is required for all parents of new incoming students, even if those parents have had children enrolled at FGCS in previous years.
In addition, parents must confirm their intent to enroll by phone or email within three days of being offered a spot, and must fill out and turn in registration paper work by the deadline listed in registration messages, which are sent in July. Failure to submit registration paperwork by the deadline will result in your child's space being forfeited.
Non-Discrimination Policy
No student or applicant for enrollment as a student at Forest Grove Community School shall be discriminated against in any educational program or activity on the basis of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, disability, income level, proficiency in the English language or athletic ability. Enrollment of any student receiving special education services pursuant to an Individual Education Plan must be approved by the student’s IEP team.
